Fell walks

 Ouse Bridge Guest House is located at on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake, there are many brilliant walks easily accessible such as Sale fell, Ling fell, Binsey, and of course Skiddaw. We can give you more information on check in and we also have a map collection available for you to use if you feel like following in Wainwrights footsteps.

Open water swimming

 Due to the proximity to the lake open water swimming is very popular in the area. The lake edge is just a short walk from the Guest house making it easy to go for a dip at any time of day.

The Lake District National park has a series of useful guides to the lakes with general information on swimming. Their website also provides a list of lakes in which you can swim.

Boat Hire / Water Sports

For those looking for water based activities, such as hiring a boat, wind surfing, paddle boarding or canoeing, there are a number of marinas just a 5 minute drive from Ouse Bridge Guest House.

Fishing at Bassenthwaite Lake

Bassenthwaite Lake offers a variety of fish with a good head of roach, perch and pike. During the autumn, the outflow of the lake at Ouse Bridge is a popular area for salmon fishing. Fishing permits are required before fishing at Bassenthwaite Lake and are available from Keswick TIC, Youdales Newsagents in Keswick and the Castle Inn Hotel. Adult day permits for coarse fishing are currently £7.00. Permits for salmon fishing on the short river section above Ouse Bridge are £9.00 per day. Concessionary and longer period permits are also available. Under 16’s may fish for free but must be in possession of a permit.

Mountain Biking

Close to Ouse Bridge Guest House are a number of forests where mountain biking is permitted. The most famous is at Whinlatter Forest, home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trails in the Lake District. The Altura Trail puts the mountain back into biking and has been built for experienced riders with good off road skills and a higher level of fitness and stamina. The Quercus Trail is a fantastic blue grade route at 7.5km long with a shorter 3.5 km option.

Cumbria is also perfect for road cycling with country lanes, quiet back roads and lots of National Cycle Network routes to explore. Various guides can be downloaded from the GO LAKES Website.

Bassenthwaite Sailing Club

For those guests who are keen sailors and members of a club affiliated to the RYA, why not bring your sailing boat and make use of the facilities at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club. Motor boats are not allowed on Bassenthwaite Lake so enjoy sailing in a serene environment undisturbed by motor boats that Bassenthwaite Lake can offer. Various events are held during the sailing year.
